It'd be nice to have evidence that we're not alone, but i've pretty much suspected that all along. And even if they weren't, the distance between Earth and wherever the signal came from is so inconceivably vast that there's no way we would ever meet them (or that they would meet us) within this lifetime.","author":"5043cdb47f123b72cc0032d3"},{"id":"551de45e6368721951f51700","topic_id":"5161dd617f123bd25900013d","body":"\"@uc9\":/dis/the-time-wasting-thread/post/551de3f7636872513e9d0f00#post_551de3f7636872513e9d0f00\r\nAnd that's terrible.","author":"536f7a11636872666e2d0000"},{"id":"551de46e6368723dece90a00","topic_id":"5161dd617f123bd25900013d","body":"\"@uc9\":/dis/the-time-wasting-thread/post/551de3f7636872513e9d0f00#post_551de3f7636872513e9d0f00\r\nhow dare u","author":"515ddf93a4c72d8a1f000d57"},{"id":"551de5556368723decf00b00","topic_id":"5161dd617f123bd25900013d","body":"[bq=\"Tom Gabriel Fischer\"]I was approached last year by one of the museum's paleonotlogists who informed me that it had been suggested to name a fossil after me, and that the naming could be celebrated by means of an event during which I would be handed a model of the fossil and Triptykon would perform at the museum, on top of the fossil display cases. We subsequently met the paleonotlogist when Triptykon played Bern late last year. He was a very pleasant, courteous, and intelligent individual, and he explained that he was part of a group of scientists who named fossils after artists they admired (e.g. King Diamond, Lemmy, etc.). If there's anything speculative fiction has taught us, is that discovery of alien life and/or first contact will be a really great thing or a really terrible thing.\r\n\r\nI'm hoping for something like Mass Effect, except take out the looming threat of the Reapers. At least that kind of setting fits a somewhat realistic approach to something quite fantastic.","author":"53
