It's been 16 years since shit started going down so almost all of the people who are responsible for giving the fandom the bad reputation are gone.  For years the fandom was in decline then around 2007 the popularity has shown consistent slow growth and in december there was a large scale spike then it's showing larger growth.  Basically imagine popularity vs time as like a long U shape.
