I don't mean \"scientists\" who claim we're going to be riding in flying cars powered by cold fusion and talking to aliens \"scientists\", rather fifty years ago it was projected that around now we would be getting computers that can pass the turing test at higher and higher rates.\r\n\r\nWhat does this mean? We're actually on track research wise and we're slightly ahead of long term predictions.\r\n\r\nWhat does this mean for the long run? It's going to be anywhere from ten to twenty years until we have computers able to pass the turing test around 70%.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAlso: The first exoskeleton was approved by the FDA.\r\n\r\n\r\nAlso: Pollution rates in the usa are dropping thank goodness.\r\n(2005-2011)\r\n!http://www.popsci.com/sites/popsci.com/files/sequence-01-reduced.gif!\r\nhttp://www.epa.gov/airtrends/aqtrends.html\r\nWe're finally getting pollution under control.","author":"38b55cdf63616403d7560600"},{"id":"53b0aba363687244add40000","topic_id":"5161dd617f123bd25900013d","body":"\"@uc9\":/dis/the-time-wasting-thread/post/53b0aa176368724049210000#post_53b0aa176368724049210000\r\nThat is mostly due to the fact that we lost a substantial amount of manufacturing jobs.","author":"4fde5cee945b700a970060fc"},{"id":"53b0acde636872432c320100","topic_id":"5161dd617f123bd25900013d","body":"\"@SeraphimDawn\":/dis/the-time-wasting-thread/post/53b0aba363687244add40000#post_53b0aba363687244add40000\r\n[bq=\"SeraphimDawn\"]\"@uc9\":/dis/the-time-wasting-thread/post/53b0aa176368724049210000#post_53b0aa176368724049210000\r\nThat is mostly due to the fact that we lost a substantial amount of manufacturing jobs.[/bq]\r\nThat was in 2009 the main cause for the 7.9% reduction of the year, but the main cause of the change is factories are getting better at preventing release of pollution into the air, coal power plants are getting better at preventing release of pollutants into the air, non-renewable power plants are getting better at preventing release of pollutants into the air and so forth.\r\n\r\n\r\nSay what you will, but the new EPA rules signed by Obama are probably going to be in the long run one of the things he's going to be remembered for positively.","author":"38b55cdf63616403d7560600"},{"id":"53b0ad8a63687242677a0100","topic_id":"5161dd617f123bd25900013d","body":"\"@uc9\":/dis/the-time-wasting-thread/post/53b0acde636872432c320100#post_53b0acde636872432c320100\r\nA lot of our polluters moved their operations to places like China and India, places with lower labor costs.","author":"4fde5cee945b700a970060fc"},{"id":"53b0aeed63687242deda0100","topic_id":"5161dd617f123bd25900013d","body":"\"@SeraphimDawn\":/dis/the-time-wasting-thread/post/53b0ad8a63687242677a0100#post_53b0ad8a63687242677a0100\r\nEh; semi-true/semi-not true. What I mean by this is that a lot of companies are actually in the process of returning to the usa because of technological reasons. Foxconn is currently in the process of moving back to the usa not cause of anything anyone did, but because they're replacing 90% of their workers with robots. The reason why they don't just make the robots in china is not bashing china, but we're kind of more advanced in that sense.\r\n\r\nWe have a entire industry devoted towards the production of adaptive robots that can assemble parts when the parts are mismatched or so forth, china on the other hand does not have this industry to the extent that companies can realistically just develop these robots in china. They would have to import the robots and every single time one breaks either export it back to the states or have a extremely specialized technician come to china to fix it. Let's face it if you had to transport any time a broken robot clear across the globe or constantly put technicians on the plane and send them to fix them that's not worth it.\r\n\r\nIt's far cheaper to just have the robots in the states that way you don't have to constantly fly out thousands of technicians just to fix little things.","author":"38b55cdf63616403d7560600"},{"id":"53b0affd6368724426c40100","topic_id":"5161dd617f123bd25900013d","body":"\"@uc9\":/dis/the-time-wasting-thread/post/53b0aeed63687242deda0100#post_53b0aeed63687242deda0100\r\nI agree.
